The Eemshaven

In the 1950's and 60's Western Europe was in large industrial development. For this, much space was needed and as a result a new seaport was built, called the Eemshaven. The Eemshaven was opened in 1973. It was mainly developed for creating space for companies during this industrial development. The Eemshaven was mainly concentrated on oil refineries and the chemical industry. The oil crisis lead to the development of a new strategy. This new strategy was developed by Groningen Seaports. The focus has been on the countries around the northern corridor, countries around the Northsea and the Baltic States. This new strategy has been very successful. In 2001 the storage of goods and the transit operations increased by 40%. The Eemshaven is still in enormous development. More and more companies are deciding to establish themselves around this seaport. Also there are more ships whose routes pass by the Eemshaven. The Eemshaven is strategically located with direct transit to the Ruhr area and with Germany as a top destination.
